Camps Songs

Tomorrow we awake early and drive into the mountains to retrieve our boy. As we wind up camp memories week, please share your favorite and least favorite camp song off all time.

For me:

Favorite--It's a toss up between Green Grow the Rushes, ho! and Oo-ooh, I wanna linger ooo-ooh, a little longer . . .The first is really fun to sing, especially if you and your friends get to be "Three! Three! The rivals!" and really ham it up. The second song we always sang as part of the last night ritual at girl scout camp as we set our candle boats adrift on the lake. Very emotional.

Least Favorite? No question here. Pass It On Bleah. The summer I learned this song there was a toothpast commercial clogging the airwaves that had the same basic slogan: "Your mouth will taste so fresh and clean you'll want to pass it on . . . . (roll image of couple kissing)" So in my young brain this song was bonded to mental images of this uber-cheesey ad. But even without that association, this song has issues, IMHO. Who decided that the phrase, "once you've experienced it" is singable?

I only did Girl Scout camp growing up

(Spirit Lake up on Mt. St. Helens was the most beautiful place ever. Leaving it the last time I was seized with a warning to look around close, it would be the last time I would see that place. I never got back due to college, etc. and then six years later - it really did go away forever)

But I digress (again)

One of my favorites was Flicker of the campfire but we were also singing a lot of Peter Paul and Mary (early 70's).

The worst stuff was actually over in the youth group and my nomination for Burn This Song are two: We are One in the Spirit with several thousand verses and about five notes although the song does occasionally run through my head during certain GA floor debates... and my all-time I can't believe I sang this nomination: I Wish We'd All Been Ready

Two men walking up a hill
One disappears and the the others left standing still
I wish we'd all been ready...

I had Hal Lindsely right along side those warm fuzzies.

Did you sing, "Under the bamboo, under the bamboo tree..."? That was my favorite. I may not remember what my husband told me last night, or who I'm supposed to call today, but I know every word to those camp songs from forty years ago.

I'm with you on "Pass It On". One of the most hilarious things I ever saw/heard was Steve Taylor and his band at the Universal Amphitheatre back in the mid-80's, singing that song to the tune of "Born to Be Wild".

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I've always thought that "once you've experienced it" line was a micocosm (did I spell that right?) of everything that is wrong with modern church music.

Wait...somebody hid my soapbox..!

I went to Camp Fire Girls camp, not Girl Scout Camp, but I would put money on lots of the same songs.

This past week for some reason I've been channeling my camp song leaders from 20 years ago and humming both "Alice's Camel" and "Fruit and Jello"--both completely pointless and repetitive songs that we loved and found hilarious.

oops - I just clicked on the link to the Mm I want to linger song - that page has a view of Mt. St. Helens - the YMCA camp was two camps down from the girl scout camp with the boy scouts (coolest boat on the lake) inbetween. I threw in the Spirit Lake thing not knowing you were linking there... okay serious need to get back to sermonhead...

Anitra,
I only linked there cause that's the site that came up when I googled for the song lyrics. Doo do Doo do . . .

Okay-least favorite is easy: there are 3, and they are all ugly, and t this day I insist that I don't know how to play them on guitar when someone suggests them: Pass It On, One Tin Soldier (and the bloody morning after....ooh, ooh) and Puff the Magic Dragon.

Favorites: oh my gosh, so hard to pick-----Rhody's song ( a girl scout thing that was allegedly written at my camp, but we know how those things go), Flicker, The Urchin song....

Pass It On. Most Annoying. Song. Ever.

The only thing worse than singing it at camp? Having your 50-something pastor suggest that the praise band try to pass this lovely nugget off as a Ska song...

Ever seen a drummer cry? It ain't pretty...

Best song memory? Singing 3-part harmony with my best Girl Scout buddies, one of which has gone on to a career at the NY Met Opera. The other was a voice major. It really didn't matter whether it was Greasy Grimy Gopher Guts or Barges, it was a little taste of heaven :)

I really don't remember much of camp songs. Although Pass It On has thankfully passed out of my memory. And Michael still suffers carpal tunnel from rowing that damned boat ashore.

I always liked Kumbaya. And "It only takes a spark to get a fire going", though it's corny as all get out.

and, Sorry Rachel. I borrowed your soapbox for moving.

One of my Favourites was Flicker and we even had href="http://followingfrodo.blogspot.com/2005/08/flicker-of-campfire-part2.html">another verse

What I found was that by the end of the summer many favourites were also becoming least favourites. SOmething about singing them every night for 7 weeks...

But certainly my least favourite category were those ones where you build a list and sing through teh whole list on every verse. I can't stand 12 Days of Christmas for the same reason.

This was church camp.

Favorite - "Once an Austrian ..." or "Dum Dum Dah Dah" (which might be unknown in other parts)

Worst - I don't really have any that I hate. I do dislike that the camp has added hand gestures to almost every song - they look too much like "praise hands" to me. I've never been comfortable with the whole raise your hands while singing thing.
