A Famous Compliment--maybe

I got a mailing today about an upcoming conference at which Indigo Girl Emily Saliers will be sort-of present via a taped message.

This reminded me that it is possible that Emily Saliers complimented me on one of my very early preaching efforts. Here is how it might have happened:

Emily's sister, Jenny Saliers, went to college with me. We weren't friends exactly, but our friendship circles overlapped. We were more than nodding acquaintances. I was very involved in the church on campus and was often involved in planning student-led services. This was the case on the weekend in question. In fact, my role in that service was "preacher" or what was passing for preaching that day. Jenny's sister happened to be visiting her on campus that weekend and they came to the service. I ran into them later that day and Jenny said something like, "Good job, Rebel!" And her sister agreed, "Yes, that was a really, really good message!"

But here's the thing. I'm pretty sure Jenny has more than one sister. Was the one that complimented me the one who went on to superstardom? Or another one? This was a good five years before the Indigo Girls hit the big time. I didn't know I needed to pay attention--so I'll probably never know.

Hmmm....I have another friend who went to college with one of Emily's sisters. Was your college in Ohio?

Emily had 3 sisters: one older and two younger. The youngest has passed away. I can't remember which names are which, though. ONe is an opera singer, I think.

What conference are you doing with them? I did one a couple years back and it was awesome.

That is funny. Do you ever wonder who all will be claiming to have known you ever so well when you are famous?

PPB--Yes, my college is in Ohio. And the conference is a Cov. Network thing this fall.

Did your college often get its name mispronounced? Did you contemplate calling it Rooster college?

If so, then I bet you anything you knew my friend---she did college ministry stuff as a college kid, too. And she was friends with the eldest saliers. It's a small world, after's a small world after all...oh and you should go to the conference. I love emily saliers and she is absolutely a chip off the saliers block---don is utterly delightful.

ppb-Yup. I was one or two years behind Jenny, so unless your friend was a couple years ahead of her, I probably did know her.

shameless plug:

Covenant Network Conference registration & details are now officially posted and ready to take your registration.

Emily wanted to be there but the Indigo Girl's manager booked them into Australia (drat!). So her father is doing a presentation solo w Emily present by pre-recorded video.

If this is too explicitly promotional, let me know and I'll be happy to withdraw the comment or go ahead and delete it with my permission.
