Big Purple Candles ordered for church Advent wreath in early November had not arrived by the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. A call to the shipper produced assurances that they would be there by for the start of Advent on December 1. Uh . . . .
Venture to craft store to buy candles so we would have them on the REAL first day of Advent produced blank stares when we asked for purple candles. Only red, green and gold on offer. Or white.
Emergency raid of Sunday school supply room discovered purple candles left from last year's advent workshop.
First Sunday of Advent found Pastor Rebel duct-taping these narrow candles into the wide candle holders on the church advent wreath.

My advice: next year check with the local Catholic supply store.
Though I like your resourcefulness!
The worst thing is the WAS a church supply house. You'd think they'd know right?
Oh I feel your pain. Our purple candles were out and ready to go two weeks before we needed them...and then three of them disappeared. We wound up with one tall candle from someone's house and the only surviving candle, which was much shorter. If you were sitting in just the right place you couldn't tell there weren't four candles up there!
Purple candles seem to be very hot items this year.
:)
A few years back we ordered new pillar advent candles. ANd they were designed to have a spike hold them in place. Our holders had little holes (standard candle holder sized) which had worked in past since the pillars had a slot to fit around the taper holder (or something like that).
So I spent an entire morning melting stubs into the new pillar candles to make them sort of work in the wreath.
NOw we just use "regular" candles.
