So--my daughter and I went to see Horton Hears a Who tonight. Since my brain was still partially in sermon writing mode, it struck me that the character of Horton the Elephant bears more than a passing resemblance to Martin Luther. In spite of fierce pressure to "recant" his belief that there are small people on the dust speck, he boldly proclaims, "Here I stand. I can do no other!"
Think I'm losing it??
Well, an archived Village Voice article notes that:

That is so cool.
That IS cool.
But it reminds me of those looong drives home after seeing movies like Star Wars or The Empire Strikes Back.
Sermon-writing mode, indeed.
Now I'm not sure whether to go see the movie or stay away....the similarities are a little uncanny!
Oddly, the little curls by his ears look a bit like Horton's ears... hmmmm
I spent about half the movie thinking about theological implications of the story, from faith to community, etc. A couple days later the FPK says something about how Horton and the kids had more faith than the grown-ups - Just like Jesus said. There ya go.
I did a series a few years back on the theology of Dr. seuss, mostly using "Seussical the Musical" for a place to start discussion-- lots of stuff about Spirit, creativity, faithfulness, temptation, even resurrection I think. . . it was a blast. But I never thought of the Luther connection! Very good!
